Dr. Alessandra Tammaro

Dr. Tammaro is Principal Investigator at Leiden University Medical Center, leading the Computational Tissue Exposomics research line within the Systems Pathology Research Group.

Born and raised in Naples, Italy, dr. Tammaro studied Medical Biotechnology at the University of Naples Federico II, graduating cum laude. In 2012, she moved to the Netherlands to pursue her PhD at the University of Amsterdam and Amsterdam UMC, where she investigated immune-mediated mechanisms of kidney injury and maladaptive repair.

After completing her PhD in 2018, she began developing her own research line, focusing on how metabolic changes and cellular senescence contribute to kidney fibrosis. This work led her to a broader question: how do environmental exposures shape these processes and influence tissue resilience and susceptibility to disease? Her current research investigates how the exposome affects cellular metabolism, immune responses, and tissue repair, within the broader context of planetary health.

In 2025, she moved to LUMC to establish her independent research group, supported by a Junior Kolff grant from the Dutch Kidney Foundation.

She leads two international consortia between the Netherlands and Brazil, PMkidney and RENAL-HEAT-MAP, investigating how environmental and climate-related exposures affect kidney health and resilience.
