Dr. Jesper Kers

Dr. Kers is pathologist and Principal Investigator at the Departments of Pathology of the LUMC, Erasmus MC and Amsterdam UMC, leading the Systemic Immunopathology research line within the Systems Pathology Research Group.

Dr. Kers studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In 2009, he started an MD/PhD trajectory at Amsterdam UMC with postgraduate training at INSERM is Paris, France, and the Institute for Medical Immunology of the Free University of Brussels, Belgium. He underwent residency training in pathology at the Amsterdam UMC with differentiation in systems immunology and computational modeling with deep learning at the Ragon Institute of Mass General Hospital, MIT and Harvard University in Cambridge, United States. Since 2019, he is a consultant pathologist specialized in systemic immunopathology, renal pathology and transplant pathology.

His current research focuses on deciphering tissue immune responses in the context of auto- and alloimmune disease, tissue injury and repair, and how these immune responses are being shaped by local metabolism and the environment. To achieve this goal, the group focuses on the use of computational modeling and image analysis with systems biology, computer vision and deep learning. Dr. Kers heads the Computational Pathology and Diagnostics (CPD) Unit at LUMC with the mission to translate quantitative pathology into daily clinical practice.
